We provide hostel services to meet the diverse needs of Indigenous communities in the following categories:

Transitional / Homeless

Moving to a new city, finding a job, visiting friends?   Whatever your reason- AHL offers you a place to stay!

The Transitional category caters for Indigenous people who require accommodation at a subsidised rate where part of the fee is funded by AHL. You may require this accommodation service for a number of reasons which may be for employment, medical, legal or personal reasons. AHL provides a culturally supportive network where most staff and all residents are Indigenous people.  

This category of hostel also caters for homeless young people and adults. It can help you develop life skills to enable you to live independently.

Accommodation in this category is available in over 30 hostels nation-wide.

Homeless

Homelessness is a situation facing many Australians - including Indigenous Australians.

The Homeless category caters for Indigenous people who are without any accommodation. AHL provides a culturally supportive network where most staff and all residents are Indigenous people.  

The Transitional category also caters for Indigenous people in this situation.

Indigenous Youth Mobility Program (IYMP)

Young, Indigenous and doing a Trade, Traineeship or Tertiary Studies? If you, or someone you know, is or wants to- AHL offers a place to stay!

AHL provides accommodation services for the Indigenous Youth Mobility Program (IYMP) which is run by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). The IYMP aims to increase the participation of young Indigenous people aged 16 to 24 in trade apprenticeships, traineeships and tertiary studies.


Tertiary Education and Training 

Studying at TAFE or University? AHL provides housing located near TAFE's and Universities!

Pursuing further education and qualifications sometimes requires relocating to larger centres. There could be other reasons for living away from home while studying at tertiary institutions and training.  AHL provides students the opportunity to continue with their studies while receiving subsidised accommodation.

There are currently 19 hostels nationally including IYMP hostels.

Secondary Education

In Year 7 to 12 or soon will be? AHL is your home away from home while studying!

Indigenous young people of school age may need to live away from home in order to access education facilities. There can be other reasons requiring staying at a hostel while at school.

AHL has an agreement with Centrelink for Indigenous secondary education students whereby ABSTUDY subsidises AHL hostel accommodation. ABSTUDY also provies other allowances such as for education costs.

There are 16 Secondary Education hostels nationally operated or suported by AHL.

Aged Care

Did you know Indigenous Australians require Aged Care services earlier than other Australians?
AHL provides older Indigenous Australians a place to stay.

The Aged Care category caters for older Indigenous people provides residential care particularly to those suffering from disabilities and chronic health problems. AHL enables residents to live in a supportive environment while continuing to live in the company of other Indigenous people.

Currently AHL has one Aged Care facility in Alice Springs.

Medical 

Need to travel to access medical assistance? Visiting someone in hospital?  AHL understands the demands of health-related issues on Indigenous Australians and offers you a place to stay!

The Medical Transient category caters for Indigenous people who require accommodation while accessing medical treatment. Health care can be quite a distance from rural and remote communities and this service enables patients and their family or friends with a place to stay.

The Medical Transient option is available in 11 hostels, nation-wide.


Substance Use Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation from substance use requires care and support.  AHL can offer you these and a place to stay.

The Substance Use Rehabilitation category caters for Indigenous people participating in rehabilitation programs from the effects of substance use. AHL provides a secure place to stay, where the environment is culturally appropriate and conducive to their efforts at rehabilitation.

Accommodation for this category is available in 23 hostels nation-wide.

Renal

Renal dialysis is a major problem for Indigenous people.

These hostels cater specifically for people who require access to treatment at local renal centres.

There are presently 4 renal hostels.

Employment & Training

These hostels cater provide accommodation for Indigenous young people or adults to access jobs or training.

There are presently 2 renal hostels.
