Accommodation tariff rates are set at affordable levels for Indigenous residents as follows:

  • Employed Residents
Tariff is set at 25% of the national weekly wage
  • Dependent Children over 1 Year
Tariff is set at a flat rate of $5 a day
  • Unemployed
Tariff is tied to the level of pension or allowances paid to residents by Centrelink (Tariff is 65% of these)

Special tariffs apply for:

  • Secondary Students
  • Residents on the Patient Assisted Travel Scheme
  • Residents who have their tariff paid by their employer, a government agency or a community agency.

Each hostel can advise you on what you will need to pay and payment is required before you stay. Rates are reviewed regularly to take into account increases in both the national average weekly wage and Centrelink benefits.

Why AHL charges for accommodation

The Australian Government funds AHL to provide affordable hostel accommodation to meet the needs of Indigenous people. The funding from the Government does not cover the full cost of operating hostels.

Money paid by residents helps AHL to meet the full cost of providing the accommodation and 3 meals a day services.

Transient

Moving to a new city, finding a job, visiting friends? Whatever your reason- AHL offers you a place to stay!

The Transient category caters for Indigenous people who require accommodation at a subsidised rate- where part of the fee is funded by AHL. You may require this accommodation service for a number of reasons- these could be for employment, medical, legal or personal reasons. AHL provides a culturally supportive network where most staff and all residents are Indigenous people.

Accommodation in this category is available in over 30 hostels nation-wide.

Homeless

Homelessness is a situation facing many Australians - including Indigenous Australians.

The Homeless category caters for Indigenous people who are without any accommodation. AHL provides a culturally supportive network where most staff and all residents are Indigenous people.

There are 8 hostels nation-wide exclusively for the homeless, but the Transient category also caters for Indigenous people in this situation.

For tertiary students, there are currently 16 hostels nationally. This figure includes IYMP hostels.

Primary and Secondary Education

In year K-12 or soon will be? AHL is your home away from home while studying!

Indigenous children and young people of school age may need to live away from home in order to access primary and secondary education facilities. Other factors can also influence reasons for staying at a hostel while at school.

AHL has an agreement with Centrelink offering a program for Indigenous children of school age. AHL also subsidises accommodation for secondary education students receiving ABSTUDY living allowances.

There are 16 Secondary Education hostels nationally operated or suported by AHL.

The Medical Transient option is available in 16 hostels, nation-wide.

Substance Use Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation from substance use requires care and support- AHL offers this, along with a place to stay.
