‘BENNETT, ELLIOTT (1924-1981), boxer, was born probably on 3 April 1924 in south-east Queensland. `Elley’ was raised at Barambah (later Cherbourg) Aboriginal Settlement, near Murgon and Maryborough. At 13 he left school and became a rural labourer. He played football at first, but his shortness pushed him into boxing. Showing promise, he trained with `Snowy’ Hill in Brisbane and fought there from September 1946. An outstanding talent in the boxing ring, Elley (short for Elliot) Bennett held Australian bantam and featherweight titles and was also the star of the Snowy Hill’s boxing troupe. Mr Bennett retired from boxing in 1954, however he continued to teach and encourage young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth to participate in the sport. Mr Bennett passed away in Bundaberg in 1981. In 1982 the name of the hostel, previously known as the Apia Hostel, was changed to honour the memory of Elley Bennett. AHL acknowledges the Yuggera People as the traditional owners of the land on which we operate the hostel. AHL pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging |
