Gapapuygu and means ‘A place of shelter during walkabout’.  In 1981, the hostel was given this name by Dhawa, head of the Gupapuygu tribe, who created this name by combining the local area names of Galawinku, Millingimbi and Yirrakala in the Arnhem Land Reserve.
