Michael Newman is a Galari Gibir (Lachlan River Man) of the Wiradjuri People, the People of the Three Rivers, Michael holds familial and cultural connection to Central West, Riverina-Murray and Capital Country areas of New South Wales.

Michael holds a Bachelor of Business with a dual specialisation in Leadership and Management and Strategic Planning from Charles Sturt University and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Michael is a dedicated and dynamic leader with over twenty years of experience in enhancing the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people and communities across the gamut of human services by working across the sectors of Education, Training, NSW Police, Communities and Justice, and Aboriginal Affairs.

Michael has extensive operations and corporate governance experience having held management and director positions at the local, regional, state and national level.

Michael is currently the Deputy Chief Executive Officer at Lowitja Institute, Australia's only national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community controlled health research institute where he supports the strategic work across the operational teams of Workforce, Research and Knowledge Translation, Policy and Corporate Services.  

Previous to this, Michael was Chief Operations Officer with Orange Aboriginal Medical Service where he oversaw the divisions of Diversified Services and Corporate Services where he played a pivotal role in the development and implementation of organisational development plans, ensuring staff and systems are safe and compliant, effective, efficient and quality-driven whilst securing funding, growing the workforce, and designing and expanding services for the community across NDIS, Out-of-Home Care and Early Years, Children and Family.

Michael also currently serves on the Ministerial Aboriginal Partnership Group (NSW Department of Communities and Justice), National Health and Medical Research Council Indigenous Advisory Group, Yilabara Board of Directors and Western Health Alliance Limited Board of Directors.

Michael has proudly devoted his career to elevating Aboriginal voices through enacting self-determination in service design and delivery, endlessly pursuing meaningful and impactful outcomes with and for Aboriginal people and communities.
