Aboriginal Hostels Limited (AHL) extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends and community of Tony Mundine OAM
following his passing.
Tony held a special place within AHL. For four decades, Tony Mundine Hostel in Sydney has proudly carried his name and reflected the values he represented.
His connection with AHL went well beyond the hostel’s name. Tony generously gave his time to support and encourage staff, residents and students. He shared his knowledge and experience, promoted health and wellbeing, and helped young people build confidence, form friendships and believe in what they could achieve.
Tony’s influence continues to be felt by staff, residents and former residents connected with the hostel.
Through the Elouera Tony Mundine Gym in Redfern, Tony also made a significant difference in the lives of generations of Aboriginal young people. The gym provided a place for health, discipline, friendship and belonging.
A proud Bunjalung man from Baryulgil, New South Wales, Tony was a respected Aboriginal leader and one of Australia’s greatest boxing champions. His remarkable sporting career inspired people across Australia, but it was his generosity, mentorship and commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people that made his connection with AHL so meaningful.
Tony’s legacy lives on through the hostel that carries his name and the many people he encouraged and supported.
AHL will continue to honour Tony’s legacy. We will work closely with the Mundine family to recognise his connection with our company in a way that honours his life and respects the family’s wishes.
Our thoughts are with the Mundine family, including family members who are part of the AHL community, and with everyone whose life Tony touched.
